To some people, a car speaker box might seem as simple as a wooden box with a huge hole cut into it.

Some people simply cannot appreciate how one can improve the sheer sound quality of listening to your favourite tunes by learning the proper way to make a speaker box.

Planning stage:

To start off, planning is key when it comes to the perfect speaker box. Your speaker box can come in a range of different shapes and sizes ultimately determining the crispness and quality of sound.

No matter what the size or make of your car, you can customize your box to fit your needs and style.

Firstly you need a measuring tool to establish the shape and size of your box and to determine the placement space available to you.

Then you need to check your manufacturer’s specs regarding the speaker volume. You need to design the box making sure the dimensions reach the optimal range for the speaker.

You need to calculate your dimensions using this formula: multiply the depth, height and length of the internal dimensions.

This will ultimately give you the internal volume. Your box’s height and length serve as the internal dimensions of your box.

 Starting the assembly:

Once you are done planning, you need to buy your material.  The ideal material to use here is a medium-density fibreboard.

It has non-resonating properties and is tough and durable whereas plywood is not.  Make a template on paper to ensure that none of your material goes to waste, and trace your design onto the fibreboard.

Then use a wood saw to cut out your shapes, taking care not to inhale wood residue and dust.

Cutting angles can get tricky.  Use your previously angle-cut piece as a guide by placing it side by side with the next piece when starting to cut out another angle.

To make pieces flush with one another you can run them through a router table together to trim off any unequal or rough parts eliminating inconsistencies.

Now we get to put it all together.  You need to check your speakers’ specs to establish the diameter of the driver.

Mark out the centre area on the front of the speaker to which you will mount the driver.  To make a perfect circle you will use a router and a Jasper circle guide, where after you will use sandpaper to smoothen the opening.

Drill some pilot holes around the joints and lengths of the box where you want to put your screws in.

Apply a thin line of adhesive along the joints before screwing the pieces together at the pilot holes with wood screws.

You should use rectangular braces around the hollow area in the box to ensure structural integrity, but take care not to block any airflow.

Make sure your seams are airtight by using generous amounts of silicone caulk to seal off all parts where sound could possibly escape.  Your caulk needs to dry for up to 24 hours.

 To finish off your box, you need to drill a hole at the bottom back part for the speaker cable to run through.

Clean up your box properly by removing dust, shavings and other residue.  Now you can drill the pilot holes for the drivers.  Run a good amount of speaker cable through the hole in the back.

Attach the speaker cable connector to the back hole and attach the wiring to the connector.

For reduced resonance, layer around an inch of poly filler to the interior of your box at the top, back and bottom.

The last few steps to your speaker box success is to wire the cable to the driver, securing the driver by attaching it to the box face and patting yourself on the back for successfully assembling a speaker box.
